DVOŘÁK'S PRAGUE FESTIVAL 2008
Although in the course of Antonín Dvořák's lifetime (* 8 Sept 1841 - † 1 May 1904) his compositions were included in the concert programs of renowned orchestras and concert halls in Europe, North America and Australia, even at the height of his fame Dvořák considered himself to be first and foremnost a Czech.
He returned to Prague from his numerous successful trips abroad; in Prague he was actively involved in major institutions like the Conservatory or the Royal Czech Society of Sciences, and he played a leading role in the establishment of the Czech Philharmonic. Dvořák conducted the orchestra's first concert on 4 January 1896.
We firmly believe that the topics of Antonín Dvořák & Prague and Dvořák & Central Bohemia are subjects with an international context, yet at the same time is absolutely Czech.
Dvořák moved to Prague in 1857, when he started to study music at Organ School and played the violin in the Cecilia Society, Karel Komzák's band and the orchestra of the Provisional Theater. In 1871 he dedicated himself solely to composing.
Although the bases of his artistic and family life were in Prague - from 1877 till the end of his life he lived at Žitná street no. 14 with his large family whom he loved over all else - Dvořák belongs to all of Central Bohemia. He was born in Nelahozeves, a village near Kralupy nad Vltavou, on 8 September 1841; in Zlonice he undertook an apprenticeship as a butcher and acquired a musical education from his teacher, Antonín Liehmann; Dvořák found his second home in Vysoká u Příbrami, where he spent his summers.
Vysoká truly meant much for a man as fundamentally tied to the Bohemian countryside and with simple people who disliked pomp and splendor. It was here where Dvořák took refuge to avoid his 50th and 60th birthday celebrations in Prague.
The focus of the festival is to promote the works and live of Antonín Dvořák in Prague and, at a later date, in Central Bohemia.
An equally important focal point is to turn Prague and Central Bohemia into an arena of international artists who come to the city and region to play the works of Antonín Dvořáka.
Antonín Dvořák is an international genius.

Collegium Marianum is a music and dance ensemble Collegium Marianum (artistic director Jana Semerádová focussing on the authentic interpretation of pre-romantic music and the reconstruction of baroque choreographies. The ensemble was founded and has worked by the Collegium Marianum Cultural Centre for Historical Arts in Prague. Members of Collegium Marianum are foremost young Czech artists playing on historical originals and copies of period instruments. As a result of their research in the music archives in the Czech Republic and abroad, they have introduced in modern premieres a number of long-forgotten treasures of the 17th and 18th century music and dance repertoire, mostly from the region of Central Europe.
Collegium Marianum collaborats with eminent international soloists, conductors, choreographers and stage directors (Andrew Parrott, Simon Standage, Chiara Banchini, Peter Kooij, Anton Steck, Peter van Heyghen, Sigrid T´Hooft, Jean-Marc Piquemal, Benjamin Lazar, Jean-Denis Monory among others) and regularly appears in a number of prestigious international music festivals, such as Tage Alter Musik Regensburg, Vantaan Barokki, Bachfest Leipzig, Mozartfest, Mitte Europa, Uckermärkische Musikwochwen, Concentus Moraviae, Festival Český Krumlov, Segni Barocchi Foligno, Dardagny, Brezice Festival and Košice Musical Spring. The ensemble has staged a number of performances in various baroque theatres throughout the Czech Republic. Collegium Marianum maintains regular collaboration with Czech TV and Czech Radio; its discography encompasses Concerti, Op. 7 by J. H. Albicastro (Pan Classic), a CD featuring the Music of Baroque Prague (2003) and Music of Baroque Prague II (2005).

“One of the fastest-rising talents on the Prague jazz scene.” - The Prague Post
“Libor Šmoldas is, toghether with David Dorůžka, Petr Zelenka and also Roman Pokorný, among the leading Czech jazz guitar players.” - Harmonie
“His trio plays rhythmical-solid music, which is significant for so called "new Czech jazz generation", open, fresh, very own and with international qualities” - Czech radio
“This unique trio has a modern approach of contemporary jazz players but also respects jazz tradition, and that's the way it should be!” - NajPonk
“While his tone is entirely in keeping with the modern mainstream idiom, he tends to be more rhythmically assertive than a lot of the players he might cite as influences.“ - AllAboutJazz
Libor Šmoldas has been one of the busiest jazz guitarists on Prague’s scene for last years. He studied at both the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and its Post-Secondary School. He plays with such legends of Czech jazz as Najponk, Jaromír Honzák, Radek Zapadlo, Yvonne Sanchez, Jiří Slavíček, Petr Dvorský, Josef Fečo and David Dorůžka, and also musicians from abroad (Bob Montgomery, Steve Fishwick, Osian Roberts, Lukasz Zyta, Pavel Wlosok). Libor writes his own music, performing it mainly with his trio (CD On the playground, 2007). He is also a member of Ondřej Pivec’s band Organic Quartet, with which he has performed at numerous European festivals (England, Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania…) and recorded albums Never Enough and Don’t Get Ideas. The album was awarded the 2006 Anděl award for Best Czech Album in the jazz and blues category and was also widely praised in the international press. In 2005 he was awarded a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. Šmoldas also teaches jazz guitar at the Post-Secondary School of the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory, and occasionally at New York University’s Prague campus. Since 2008 he is a member of Czech Jazz Society's managing board.

Beethoven Orchestra Praga (Orchestra)
Beethoven Orchestra Praga is a small orchestra of Beethoven’s type with wind instruments, whose style of performing classical music grows out of a hot-bed of authentic interpretation of early music.
Members of the orchestra use modern wind and stringed instruments, but in a manner, which tries to remain close to the classical ideal of playing: without enormous vibrato and with perfect phrasing and articulation.
In the repertoire of the Beethoven orchestra Praha there are many concerto compositions with various soloists, but it also collaborates with singers and often in choral music with the ensemble Musica divina Praga.

Jiráseks folk tale became an extremely lively portrayal of the natural rights of Man and human dignity, for which it is necessary to fight again and again. Despite the fact that the story itself is set within a mythical-fairytale framework, where there appear amongst mortals such beings as a merman or a banshee, its appeal is highly contemporary. A lordly administrator intends to fell an old linden tree, a tree shrouded in mystery and blessed with a sacred life, partly in order to humiliate the self-confident and free-thinking miller. Despite the fact that the miller, Hana and others fight with all their might in order to prevent the destruction of the tree, were it not for supernatural powers and a kind-hearted princess, nobody can say whether they would have been capable of saving it. The theme is highly current and, in the Czech Republic clearly eternal: the will of those, who instead of taking care of that which they ought to, behave like parasites and try to destroy all that stands in the way of their personal power, even if this is only a mere symbol an old linden tree.
A story about a magical tree, an ancient right, a proud miller, his charge Hanička, and a beautiful princess - this time in a modern production by stage director Vladimír Morávek, who has woven this effective parable about Czechs and Czech myths into a rich musical structure by Daniel Fikejz. The Czech countryside, itself acting as a character in this intimately-familiar folk play, comes to life in sets by Alois Mikulka and Aleš Votava.

The location's significance is corroborated by the presence of a Romanesque homestead whose remnants, an ashlar masonry wall, have been preserved in the cellar of the current palace. The homestead included a church, later rebuilt in Gothic style, of the Holy Virgin at the Pond, whose spire, until 1791, used to be the dominant feature of the north end of today's Husova Street where the current Marianske (Saint Mary) Square now lies.

Villa America - Dvorak museum
Prague, Czech Republic
The performance intelligibility for all nations has not been documented just by thousands of satisfied spectators amongst the visitors of Prague, but also by great and enthusiastic audience in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France and the greatest cities of Scandinavia, where the company performed as guests in both small and great halls.
A brief sight at the history of the main Original Music Theatre's Prague projects will also bring an evidence of its success: A Night with Mozart - premiere in 1991 within the scope of the "Year of Mozart", Wonderful Dvořák - premiere in 1991 under the auspices of UNESCO, If Strauss, than Johann - premiere in 1992, Kounic Palace, The King of Operetta at Žofín - Žofín 1994, Operetta Gala of Prague - Kaiserštejn Palace 1995, A night with Mozart II - Bertramka 1997. As far as the programs of a little different character are concerned, let us remind at least the premiere of a symphonic composition "Thalia" by Otmar Mácha in the Spanish Hall of the Prague Castle, and so on.
Shortly, we kindly invite all who lust for an unusual experience in Golden Prague. The Original Music Theatre Prague may guarantee high artistic quality and great entertainment.

Don Giovanni
in Italian, with Czech and English super titles
Conductor: Jiří Kout (Jan Chalupecký, Zbyněk Müller)
Director: Václav Kašlík, Jiří Nekvasil
The sustained popularity of Don Giovanni has resulted in extensive borrowings and arrangements of the original. The most famous and probably the most musically substantial is the operatic fantasy, Réminiscences de Don Juan by Franz Liszt. The minuet from the Finale of Act I makes an incongruous appearance in the manuscript of Liszt's Fantasie on Two Motives from Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro", and Sigismond Thalberg uses the same minuet, along with Deh vieni alla finestra, in his Grand Fantaisie sur la serenade et le Minuet de Don Juan, Op. 42. Deh vieni alla finestra also makes an appearance in the Klavierübung of Ferruccio Busoni, under the title "Variations-Studie nach Mozart" (Variation-study after Mozart). Beethoven, Danzi and Chopin each wrote a series of variations on the duet between Don Giovanni and Zerlina, Là ci darem la mano.
The music from Don Giovanni has also featured in a number of movie soundtracks, including It Happened in Brooklyn, Parting Glances, Some Girls, Madagascar Skin, Il Cermonie, and The Bonfire of the Vanities . The aria Il mio tesoro is used as the main theme to the classic Ealing comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets. In addition, Là ci darem la mano is performed in Babette's Feast between one virginal female lead, Philippa, and her suitor, the opera singer Achille Papin, at a moment of romantic indecision that mirrors the circumstances of the opera.

Muzikál Hamlet (Hamlet - The Musical) Tickets
Divadlo Kalich (Kalich Theatre)
Prague, Czech Republic
Directed by: Robert Johanson
Czech audiences and foreign tourists visiting Prague now have the unique opportunity to experience Hamlet - the Musical by Janek Ledecký in the same form in which it will be seen by American audiences. The uniqueness of this project is also proven by the fact that only 14 exclusive performances of this version will be held. The shows will be presented in English and for Czech viewers, the stage will be equipped with a special subtitling device.
About Hamlet - the Musical:
Hamlet - the Musical, by Czech hit-maker Janek Ledecký, has become a tremendous success with Prague audiences. It premiered on November 1, 1999, and the occasion coincided with the opening of the Kalich Theater, which later became one of Prague's best-known musical and dramatic venues. For an unbelievable three years, the musical entertained audiences of all generations. A total of 600 sell-out performances were held on the stage of the Kalich Theater. The musical witnessed equal success in Slovakia where it was performed on the new stage of the National Theater in Bratislava.
Hamlet - the Musical owes its success primarily to Ledecký's impressive, intelligent melodies accompanying the story of love and betrayal in the Danish kingdom. An equal degree of credit belongs to the lyrics, which sparkle with a humor and wit that are worthy of their Shakespearian heritage. A first-rate production team stood behind the musical in Prague: The impressive stage was designed by Šimon Caban, the fabulous costumes were the work of Josef Jelínek, the choreography was designed by Zuzana Krištofová, the staging was the work of Jan Kaèer and the piece was directed by the well-known Zdenìk Troška.
It is not surprising, therefore, that Hamlet - the Musical attracted the interest of producers on Broadway, the world's musical mecca. After several successful preview performances, the preparations for the American premiere of Hamlet - the Musical are currently underway. Once again, the musical will be in the hands of a superb creative and interpretive team. Director Robert Johanson needs no introduction. As one of the prominent figures in the industry, Johanson is not only a director but also a sought-after actor for musicals.
Ledecký teamed up with Johanson and co-producer Vince Parillo to produce the American version of Hamlet - the Musical. In comparison with the Czech version of the musical, new songs were added for the new production, some of the roles were given an additional dramatic boost and, most importantly, the staging of the individual scenes was modified. The new version of Hamlet - the Musical, therefore, promises an interesting theater experience not only for those visiting the Kalich Theater for the first time, but also for those who have already had the chance to see Hamlet - the Musical.

Hans Christian Andersen is one of the best-known and most popular authors of fairy tales. His fairy tales of the Princess and the Pea, the Ugly Duckling, the Tinderbox, the Little Mermaid and the Snow Queen have found a place in the hearts of children and adults alike. They have also been frequently reworked in the theatre and in film. The Snow Queen is a jewel of this genre not only owing to Andersen’s masterly narration, but also because of the message encoded within it. Kaj is struck in the eye by a shard from the Snow Queen’s mirror and his view of the world is transformed. The Snow Queen takes him away to her kingdom, but his loyal friend Gerda is determined to seek him out. She must overcome many an obstacle on her way to Kaj, but her good heart and the desire to see her faithful friend Kaj give her great strength. In the end, she frees Kaj from the power of the Snow Queen. Hans Christian Andersen, a famous author who suffered and struggled on the road to success and recognition, still wins the hearts of big and small readers the world over.

Get the most out of life and live it up, regardless of others. Have no entanglements with anybody or anything. Only acknowledge those limitations which you have set yourself – and maybe not even those! Remarkably, it is not only our age which has a monopoly on such an approach to life. It is practised by a type described by Tirso de Molina in Spain as early as 1630 and in 1665 by another great dramatist, Moliere, in France. Since that time, Don Juan has become the subject matter of countless reworkings since the discord at the centre of the work is eternal: the discord between provocation and the temptation of order which is hidden and only recognisable through belief. Juan, however, has no such belief and the belief of his servant is too tepid to be able to convince him. Moliere played the part of Sganarello in this comedy. It was in this role that he could best express the excruciating doubts of the servant who is well aware that the actions of his master are wrong, but at the same time is too weak to be able to defy such an arrogant and mesmerising attitude. His last words (“Where is my pay?”) clearly depict the shallowness of his morality. This black comedy written in prose is a permanent fixture of the theatrical repertoire. Whereas recent productions have interpreted Juan as an unconventional intellectual who does not want to reconcile himself with the falseness and emptiness of social forms and conventions, today the play requires a new interpretation which paradoxically may be closer to that of Moliere himself when he wrote of the hedonistic court of Louis XIV.*

The play has been inspired by the year of the Mozart anniversary and the original version was written in German (Eine kleine Machtmusik). The author paraphrases the topic of the artist and society. The story of the conductor Mazort is set in the last decade of the twentieth century. The personal career of a not overly convincing artist is formed and deformed in the world of polarised ideology, while his personal life has become entangled in a secret web of powerful interests. Pavel Kohout tells the story by means of anti-illusory theatre. At the virtual Spider Hotel, which can be considered to be an objectified projection of the conscience, Mazort reconstructs his career as an artist and a husband. The author has effectively woven the dramatic line of a love relationship and spy games and gradually unveils the spider’s web, in which Mazort’s life has been caught.
Performed in Czech.

Alexander Dumas’ novel The Lady of the Camellias inspired Giuseppe Verdi to write the opera which is now one of his most famous. The story of a fallen girl and her unrequited true love has moved audiences for more than 150 years. Just as moving is Verdi’s music, which gives preference to lyricism and depth of experience over theatrical ostentatiousness. Perhaps it is for this very reason that the melodies of La Traviata speak successfully to every generation.

The quartet has its permanent members playing the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. At their concerts they interpret the work of Czech and world composers of saxophone music (particularly French), jazz compositions or compositions influenced by jazz, as well as transcriptions of period music.

Casanova Tickets
Laterna Magika
Prague, Czech Republic
Historical facts give evidence that this famous globetrotter was an extremely educated and cultured man for his time but that he died a mise rable and forgotten man in the Duchcov Castle in Bohemia. His preserved memoirs are the starting point of our story. The distance between the story’s beginning and end is limited by the length of the performance, yet you will be able to get a glimpse of that period of Casanova’s life which created his myth and formed the legend. This is the magic of theatre. The boy - who in front of your eyes will change into a young man by his Fairy Godmother’s kiss - meets young Angelika at the Venice carnival and falls in genuine love with her. His desire demands everything from her without delay and startled girl runs away from him. He then spends the rest of his life pursuing, finding and losing her again. Lucia is the first to give in to his charm, Nanetta and Marticka prepare him for his "march on Rome" and even Bettina, the generally admired and courted dancer, does not resist him. Casanova becomes successful, rich and equally admired and hated but gradually boredom creeps into his heart and mind. When arrested he contemplates whether to die or to escape. Does he gain insight from his dilemmas?
The moment he is free, the same story repeats itself. His flirt with Cora lina results in a duel and murder, forcing him to be on the run again. As if chased by the instinct for self-preservation, he turns to Angelika who has been longing for him behind the walls of a nunnery. Casanova is deter mined to change his way of his life but is unable to do so. Leaving Ange lika for another illusion, he ends up in a cabaret pursuing a new flirt. At this point he faces a shocking revelation: all his loves and passions were nothing but a cover for a morbid love of himself. Casanova grows old. His wordly path comes close to its end, nothing but memories and solitude remain. He was unable to give, only to take in handfuls.
But how many men of his kind have passed through this world? And how many Angelikas? A similar story begins every day.

The saxophone quartet is an ensemble which has already taken its place along side other traditional chamber groups.
Nearly all musical styles are open to it, thanks to the wide range of expressive possibilities at its disposal.
Bohemia Saxophone Quartet explores this broad palette in their performance of original compositions for four saxophones, pieces originally intended for other instrumentations, and music from the jazz repertoire.
The rich variety of the pieces in their repertoire enables Bohemia Saxophone Quartet to perform not only in concert halls, but also in "alternative" and jazz venues as well. The unaffected musicality of their performances and their openness to diverse styles has attracted the attention of several composers, who have written more than forty pieces for the ensemble. Since Bohemia Saxophone Quartet's beginning in 1990 the ensemble has taken part in many important international music festivals, and in 1998 the group was a finalist in the competition IX. Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Paris. They have played concert tours throughout the countries of Europe, as well as in the USA, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia, Lebanon and Indonesia.

The National Theatre Ballet has continued in its tradition of presenting the ballets of the famous choreographer John Cranko. In the 2002/2003 season, the ballet performed The Taming of the Shrew. The ballet Onegin, based on Pushkin’s famous verse novel follows the story of a bored Russian aristocrat who rejects the love of a young girl, Tatiana, and prefers to flirt with her sister, Olga. Several years later, Onegin becomes aware of the fact that he has made a mistake – but it is already too late. The famous Cranko ballet provides expressive acting performances, brilliant dance technique and a very deep sense of the wide range of emotional expression in the individual characters. As well as the beautiful yearning pas de deux scenes with Onegin and Tatiana, the production also contains effective dance scenes with the entire company. When creating the music for this ballet, John Cranko and Kurt-Heinz Stolze worked predominantly with Tchaikovsky’s piano works and his Francesca da Rimini symphonic fantasia.

Mozartissimo Chamber Ensemble
Ales Hendrych - bass baritone, Marketa Bechynova - soprano
Even in Mozart's own time, just as Wolfgang Amadeus himself was charming the Prague public with the full productions of his operas, there existed various arrangements of his arias and vocal parts adapted for chamber ensembles. There are many records of such perfromances in the Estates Theatre musical archives. Unfortunately, this tradition was later passed over and forgotten and music lovers have been missing out on the unique harmony of the human voice accompanied by a trio of wind instruments.
Mozartissimo is not just an ordinary classical music performance. Using Mozart's famous sense of humor, it brings to stage a selection from operas Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Entführung aus dem Serail and Die Zauberflöte in colourful arrangements for vocals, oboe, clarinet and bassoon. Under the guidance of composer Jaroslav Krèek, the wind trio has been able to substitute the sound of a whole orchestra.
Mozartissimo transports the audience back to Mozart's own time with it's faithful period production, with all performers in period costume. Since opening in September 1997 Mozartissimo has had more than two hundred successful seasons, not only in Mozart's traditional environments of Prague and Salzburg but also worldwide. Mozartissimo has received an excited and warm reception in France, Germany, Spain, Japan and Brazil as well.

Romeo and Juliet was the first ballet by the internationally renowned choreographer Youri Vamos, who created the work for the Ballett Deutsche Oper am Rhein in 1997. He shifted the story of thwarted love from the Italian Renaissance to 1920s or 1930s, i.e. the period when Sergei Prokofiev composed the music for the work. The joie de vivre and humanity of his characters, wit, tempo and excitement all permeate the entire ballet together with the highly effective and moving romantic set designs.

A bitter play with a drop of sentiment whose heroes are not able to come to terms with the incomprehensible cruelty of time. Tennessee Williams presents a picture of corruption, violence and emotional staleness in which the desire for power and property controls and maims human lives. The southern magnate Boss Finley propels his daughter Heavenly into relationships which support his political interests. When he discovers that she is having an affair with the young Chance Wayne, he drives him from the city. The play opens at the moment when this lover returns after a number of years as a tired gigolo with a former film actress who is running away from herself and her ageing. Wayne feels that he no longer has anything to lose and he suicidally endeavours to re-establish a relationship with the love of his life. Even though Chance Wayne is no scapegoat, his personal tragedy becomes an indictment of provincial bigotry which cripples people both mentally and, gradually, physically.

The first Prague performance was at the Estates Theatre on September 7, 1856 under the baton of František Škroup. The opera was not played at Bayreuth until 1901 with Ema Destinnová (Emmy Destinn) in the role of Senta and with the conductor Felix Mottl, who performed the opera as a “ballad without intermission” in accordance with Wagner’s wishes.

Státní opery Praha (Prague State Opera)

From dark corners of the Paris Opera a voice resounds that calls the name of the very young ballet dancer Christina Daaé and encourages this extraordinary talent. Hardly anybody knows that the mysterious voice is the voice of the Phantom, a disfigured genius roaming around the labyrinth of catacombs... The ballet ensemble comes with another delicacy, a romantic story on the theme of the novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The head of our production team is Libor Vaculík who set this exciting theme also known from a musical comedy version by Andrew Lloyd Weber into a specific ballet environment. The dance/acting roles of Raoul, Christine, the Phantom and a number of other heroes will challenge again the soloists and the entire ensemble. This attractive material set into music by Petr Malásek and choreographed by Libor Vaculík has everything necessary to reach both Czech and foreign audiences and to take its place alongside successful works from past years like The Lady of the Camellias and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Between the wars, Rudolfinum was used as a parliament, but now it is used for its' original purpose - for concerts and art exhibitions. The big hall is called the Dvorak Hall, contained within and named after the great Czech composer, and is an unparalleled venue for concert-viewing and hosts many of the Prague Spring events. The small hall is called the Suk Hall and is mainly used for soloist vocal and instrumentals. The grandeur of the interior, the building as a whole and the high standard of the concerts themselves, make an evening here worthwhile.

Revenge for a perceived wrong, invisible wounds, envy and covetousness interlace this realistic tragedy with a Czech rural setting. As in the case of his first drama Vojnarka, Jirásek drew his material from the Litomyšl area. The story is simple. The peasant Divíšek has devoted his life to a single thought – to return to the farm which his ancestors lost. When the opportunity arises to buy up the promissory notes of his richer but profligate neighbour, Divíšek does not hesitate a moment before destroying him. However, the demon of jealousy then turns against the one who summoned it: the father infects his son with hatred and jealousy and the son subsequently dies. Jirásek’s coarse and strict play is everything but a revivalist idyll. It is modern in its truthfulness and its merciless depiction of the dark aspects of the Czech nature.

Black Box Tickets
Theatre Image
Prague, Czech Republic
You encounter a number of new elements in the Black box performance. You will be surprised by possibilities of black effects, luminescent lights and their visual effects. Modern dance is supported by perfect black light technique, causing dancers and objects to levitate, rotate and move in defiance of the rules of gravity. Constituent elements are inspired by the contemporary world, time, even dreams, and the transformed fantasy of moving objects. The subconscious mind of each visitor can find its own association and interpretation.
A combination of interesting props, original music and projection once again provides our multinational audience with a very unusual experience. Non-verbal sketches, reflecting detective, crime and action stories, are interspersed with scenes in "the black". They tell us a story of unrevealed and unknown crime, culprits and their hunters.
The hero, acting as a brave and indestructible executor of the Law, chases fleeing gangsters with the determination of a hunting dog. Find out yourself whether or not the black box mystery will be revealed.

Don Giovanni Tickets
National Marionette Theatre
Prague, Czech Republic
Mozart composed the original Don Giovanni opera especially for Prague, where he personally conducted the first performance at the famous Estates Theatre in 1787. This marionette theatre version tells the classic tale with tall puppets dressed in authentic 18th century period costume. The whole production pays homage to the Mozart era and is a joy to experience.
Act I begins: Seville in the 1600s.
At night, outside the Commendatore's palace, Leporello grumbles about his duties as servant to Don Giovanni, a dissolute nobleman. Soon the masked Don appears, pursued by Donna Anna, the Commendatore's daughter, whom he has tried to seduce. When the Commendatore himself answers Anna's cries, he is killed in a duel by Giovanni, who escapes. Anna now returns with her fiancé, Don Ottavio. Finding her father dead, she makes Ottavio swear vengeance on the assassin..…

Unique collection of curiosities and miracles of the 20th century! First time in public!
Practical demonstrations!

Welcome to my Cabinet. After years of hard work trying to solve Prazak’s Circular Paradox I have decided to make the results of my research public to both the layman and experts. As the official institutions have not been very understanding I have decided, or rather, I have been forced, to establish the Cabinet at my own expense in order to demonstrate in front of an audience that the only way to escape the vicious circle of the expansion of civilisation is through miracles inside ourselves. The mentioned demonstration is not entirely risk-free and therefore I am pleased that you have taken that risk and visited the Cabinet.

Rendez-vous Tickets
Laterna Magika
Prague, Czech Republic
Later, the company was awarded the best collective interpretive performance for Puzzles, duets and soloists for Graffiti also received various other awards on both theatre and ballet level.
The opening of the new title called Rendez-vous has two scenic versions: first one opened on 2 August 2005 in Cathedrale d´Image in southern France, the second originated as a regular performance for the Prague scene. Both versions, however, were created in a co-production with French La Compagnie Commun Instant and a German agency Noa Entertainment becoming a project financed by the European Union through a grant programme for the development of European cultural co-operation Culture 2000.
The whole performance was much influenced by the environment of a disused stone quarry (Cathedrale d´Image), which intrigued Josef Svoboda and Albert Plecy as an ideal place for concerts, exhibitions and performances. This time, it was Jean-Pierre Aviotte who was inspired by this ‘magical’ space with unique atmosphere as if created for multimedia projects, to produce a performance based on the principles of Laterna magika, using some other unconventional scenic instruments to narrate a mysterious encounter in the bullring. It is a scenic ‘flash-back’ of moments of a human life compiled into a mosaic of film, music, choreographic and acrobatic fairy tale.

Our Uppish and Defiant Fellows
In 1887 the National Theatre's first dramaturge wrote this, the first Czech realist play. To critics of the time it seemed too different, too unusual. They failed to understand it and rejected it. But time has proved its qualities: it has become one of the cornerstones of the golden fund of Czech drama. The author depicts the everyday life of an idyllic-looking village in southern Bohemia. Under the surface of neighbourly camaraderie, dramas are bubbling - there is rivalry for the prestigious designation of 'first farmer', along with discussions of who will be the night-watchman. An unknown man threatens arson. After more than a century this play is more than ever ours - and about us.

The theatre has the unique privilege of presenting the whole of a lifetime in a single night. The comedy we offer you is as old as mankind itself - good and evil, love and hate, strength and weakness, happiness and sadness and at last wisdom and the understanding of what is really important in life.
Two clowns are hatched out of two eggs washed ashore by the waves. Before they know where they are, they are confronted by the Tempter, the symbol of the snares and deceptions of life, and by Venus, the vision of mysterious beauty, which leads them to set out on a pilgrimage. The pilgrimage proves as hard and as beautiful as life itself - the clowns grow old while what they yearn for remains eternally young.
In our circus tent you will see a fairy-tale. In fairy-tales everything is true-to-life except that it is more translucent, clearer. That is why we so badly need the wisdom of fairy-tales in which all ends well.

The author gave his most famous play the subtitle A Romantic Comedy, yet he also gave free rein to his famously acerbic pen and ironic spirit. A man wants to create a woman in his own image but she defies him and becomes a being with opinions of her own. Nobody has ever written as entertainingly about emancipation as Shaw.

In La traviata, to the libretto from the novel by Alexandre Dumas the Younger, La Dame aux camélias, telling the story of Marie Duplessis, a noted courtesan and idol of the 1840s’ Parisian society, Verdi in fact created history’s first major opera dealing with a contemporary social theme. This was only one of the work’s several aspects that proved unpalatable for the audience at its premiere in Venice, in 1853: beyond that, they were similarly shocked by the principal part there being assigned to a courtesan, and that moreover she was portrayed as a heroine. Consequently, the premiere ended by a fiasco. Soon thereafter, nonetheless, Verdi’s La traviata scored its first triumphs, and ever since then has remained a hugely loved repertoire staple.
